Overview

History

The PhD Program in Computer Science and Systems Engineering has been established in 2014 to favor a fruitful interaction between researchers coming from different backgrounds but related research fields.

The Computer Science curriculum continues the tradition of the former PhD Program in Computer Science, which dates back 1993. Over 20 years it graduated 72 students, who are today covering positions in prestigious Academic and Research institutions and industries.

Mission and Organization

Our PhD program is a three years research degree structured in two curricula:

  • Computer Science
  • Systems Engineering

In all these areas, our PhD students are expected to acquire broad foundations on both practical and theoretical aspects, learn how to conduct high quality research, and solve important research questions of a specific area.

Research Activities

The research lines can be classified according to the research programs of our department:

Please consult the DIBRIS home page for more details on activities and projects carried out at DIBRIS, and the specific research projects page for an updated list of PhD project proposed by CSSE research groups.

Training Activities  and Study Plan

Training activities include attending classes, national and/or international schools on advanced topics, seminars, and conferences.
Please consult the Activities  page for more details on research activities of our program.

Infrastructures

Phd students have access to all Unige/Dibris facilities including office and common rooms both in Villa Bonino, Valletta Puggia and Savona, computer and research labs, bibliotheques, and canteen. More than 20 workstations are available at the students of the computer science curriculumin in the room 309 of Valletta Puggia. Other workstations are available in research labs dedicates to specific activities in Savona and Villa Bonino.

International dimension

The PhD Program has established agreements for double degrees and collaborations with  several international research institutes.
The PhD Program encourages visits of PhD students to foreign institutions as part of the PhD training, for a maximum of 18 months over the 3 years program. Such visits must be approved by the PhD Coordinator (visits below 6 months) or by the PhD Program Committee (visits over six months).

Career opportunities

A PhD degree in Computer Science and Systems Engineering opens a variety of career opportunities. Natural outcomes are in academic or research institutions or else in R&D departments of national and international companies. Further career opportunities, not strictly related to research, but still leveraging on the role of  ‘innovators’, include the establishment of spin-off companies or consultancy.
